EVZONES: The fiercest Greek soldiers wear skirts and sport big pompoms on their shoes.

The Evzone are the elite guards and their uniforms still reflect the War of Independence in 1820s, when Greece became free from the Ottoman empire.  Yeah, Greece is a relatively new country.  The changing of the guard ceremony includes high-stepping, arm-swinging formal marching.  And admiration from mice.

The Evzone have earned their reputation as loyal guardians of Greece.  When the Nazis captured Athens in WW II, they ordered the Evzone guarding the Acropolis to take down the Greek flag.  He stoically lowered the flag, calmly wrapped it around his body and jumped heroically from the bastion.  The Acropolis is in the center of Athens, with the Aegean Sea in the background.►►
